San Diego’s Hybritech still influences local biotech, 40 years later

In 1978, two young UC San Diego academics named Ivor Royston and Howard Birndorf had an idea: Using the new science of biotechnology, they could make better products for research and therapy. Their idea became Hybritech, San Diego’s first biotech company. Hybritech’s notable achievements included the first blood test to screen for prostate cancer, along with early biotech research into cancer therapies.
